Intramuscular Manual Therapy

  • Intramuscular Manual Therapy

Intramuscular Manual Therapy (IMT) is an effective treatment used by trained physical therapists for individuals suffering from chronic pain and neuromuscular dysfunction. IMT specifically targets muscle "trigger points" that develop as a result of various stresses, including postural and repetitive movements, muscle compensation from previous injury, and emotional stress. IMT involved the use of a thin, sterile filament needle briefly inserted into the region of your muscle's trigger point. This results in a local twitch response in your muscle that releases tension and pain. The muscle's trigger points are deactivated and shortened muscles are "loosened", resulting in a reduced pain and restoration of normal muscle length and function.

IMT, as part of your physical therapy treatment can provide immediate and long-lasting relief of pain and speeds up your recovery from injury, returning you to full functionality faster. Several Northern Rehab physical therapists have gone
through extensive IMT training, and are fully capable
of providing IMT treatment.

Your Right to Choose

The decision of where you go to receive treatment is
yours. If you have a specific therapist or practice you
would like to go to, you should let your doctor or
insurance company know this. Not all physical
therapists or practices are the same and the choice
of your provider is yours.
